Msunduzi SPCA (formerly Pietermaritzburg SPCA)
Our branch started in 1906, when Pietermaritzburg had dirt roads and ox wagons and draught animals were used for transport. Only 4 other SPCA’s existed in the country at that time: the Cape of Good Hope, Johannesburg, East London and Durban. It was a time when there was no official legislation to protect animals.

We are indebted to a handful of caring people who, in 1906, saw the need to form a society to take care of the animals in the Msunduzi/Pietermaritzburg area. From humble beginnings, the Msunduzi/Pietermaritzburg SPCA has grown into one of the largest and most active of the societies in South Africa today.
